Building on last week’s Making Space, I spent time considering the dimension of time and how better to manage it.
Here are ten thoughts that came to mind:
The scarcest resource in life is time. Not money. Money can be re-acquired. Once spent time is irretrievable.
While we should be good at how to invest our time, we are not. Time slips away due to busyness, distraction, and a lack of intention.
Time can only be managed in advance. We need space to curate our calendars.
Sequence what needs to be done by when you are best equipped to do so. Don't neglect recovery time - build it in.
The greatest gift we can give to another is our time.
The best gift of time is to share a meal. Meals are magical. The warm glow after a great meal with others is among the purest forms of joy.
We share too few meals and instead have too many meetings. After how many meetings do you say that was time worth spending?
Too often, meetings are designed (if at all) for the speaker only. Little thought is given to the attendee.
Any gathering of people must have an agenda. Agendas are just the script of the play. No director hands out scripts to the cast and calls their job complete.
There must be a Chair to run a meeting. Caution - being the chair is not carte blanche to drone on. A Chair can contribute when appropriate. But, a true maestro brings dialogue to life in the room - covering the agenda and leveraging the collective talents all present.
